It is a matter in fact, that the Great White Shark is probably the most famous predator in the world and still nowadays a very little is known about the behaviour of this animal; Do they live in groups or on their own? How and where they mating and giving birth? Do they have a particular hunting technique? Do they  roam? How fare they travel?

Next to this we have to face the fact that the Great White Shark is close to extinction and will soon or later disappear from the Oceans.  Worldwide 100 Millions of Sharks are killed every year and the Great White  is also one of the targets. 

A prime objective of SHARKPROJECT which is a German based organisation for exploration and shark-protecting,  is to  “de-criminalise” the Great White's image in addition to gaining more scientific and behavioural knowledge. This is to be achieved by communicating this newly found knowledge as effectively and as broadly as possible. The aspects “mating” and “birth” appear to be predestination for this purpose. Research on the Great White Shark is stuck in its infancy because the habitat in which these predators lives makes research difficult and the approach of the Shark to the boat or the diver takes always only a short time. This is where our project comes in: The plan is to scientifically document the everyday life of the Great White Shark over a period of 12 months in its natural habitat around Dyre-Island at Cape-Town South Africa.

Our wet-sub, the S.O.V - Shark Observer Vehicle - is specially designed for Great White Shark approach. It is motorised and in fact a two-seated underwater scooter surrounded by a cage. The two-man crew will observe the animals on established routes with the help of video cameras and document their behaviour for science.

The Team  of SHARKPROJECT,  will use this unique expedition to accelerate existing research into Great White Sharks in South Africa and hopes to find answers to all the questions about Great White Sharks.As part of the research spectacular underwater video and still material will become available which may be used by SHARKPROJECT  for educational and promotional purposes..

The Expedition has all the necessary permissions to go on with this Project and well as the complete support of the official South African Marine Coastal Management .

Mit dem U-Boot auf den Spuren der Weissen H

Auf den Spuren von Jules Vernes startet die Deutsche Organsiation SHARKPROJECT, im Mai eine einjährige Forschungsexpedition zu den Weißen Haien vor Südafrika. Das besondere: Nicht nur bahn brechende Erkenntnisse werden erwartet, sondern man erhofft sich auch noch nie gesehene Foto und Filmmaterial.

Der Weiße Hai ist der bekannteste weltweit und dabei gleichzeitig eines der geheimnisvollsten Bewohner der Ozeane.  Die Wissenschaft weiß wenig über den König der Meere. Bisher konnten nur wenige Einblicke in das Verhalten und das Leben der Tiere gewonnen werden. Leider sind wurde den Menschen durch die Medien andere Information geliefert. Horrorgeschichten nämlich, welche diesen Tieren ein Image als Killer und Menschenfresser bescherte.  Die Angst vor dem Weißen Hai ist durch Übertragung auf alle anderen Haie gleichzeitig der Untergang einer ganzen Spezies. Weltweit werden Haie erbarmungslos gejagt. Die Ausrottung der 450 Millionen Jahre alten Topräuber scheint unaufhaltsam und bedroht die Zukunft der Menschheit. „Wenn der Hai stirbt, stirbt das Meer und wenn das Meer stirbt, sterben wir!“ Diese Worte eines berühmten südafrikanischen Naturschützers zeigen eine der größten ökologischen Katastrophen auf. Haie müssen geschützt werden – doch wer schützt schon etwas, vor dem er sich fürchtet?

Die SHARKPROJECT-Expedition dient genau dieser zentralen Aufgabe - dem besseren Kennen lernen des Weißen Hais und damit dem Schutz der Haie.
Zwölf Monate lang wird dabei das Alltagsleben von Weißen Haien erforscht. Die komplette Dokumentation wird interessierten Universitäten kostenlos für eigene Forschungen zur Verfügung gestellt. Dieses „Mammutprojekt“ dient ebenfalls der „Entkriminalisierung“ des berüchtigtsten „Monsters“ unserer Phantasie sowie der Dokumentation des Lebens des bekanntesten, aber langfristig nur mäßig erforschten Haie.
