The warm equatorial
currents have permitted the development all over the Caribbean of an
incredibly rich and surprising underwater world; particularly bright
and vivid colours and the most spectacular forms of life created by
nature are found on the sandy sea beds and coral reefs. The contents
of this book include coverage of the Bahamas, Florida Keys, Cuba,
Mexico, the Caymans, Belize, Honuras (Bay Islands), French Antilles,
Dutch Antilles, plus the "Fish of the Caribbean" guide.
(From the
Introduction) "The Caribbean archipelago exerts a particular
allure on visitors, but one which cannot be explained by the
extraordinary underwater landscape, the fantastic weather and the
resort facilities alone. I think it is principally the inhabitants
of this corner of the world, their outlook on life and their music.
Their happiness and their taste for living are astonishing and
immediately take tourists, frustrated and stressed-out by their
daily routine, out of themselves. In addition their are thrilling
stories of pirates, treasure hunters and buccaneers, part of a
well-orchestrated advertising campaign. But they are still exciting
and it is not unusual, after a drink or two in one of the
innumerable ‘Buccaneers Tavern’ or ‘Pirates Pub’ for
tourists to see the infamous Henry Morgan, no less, put in an
appearance on the dock after midnight." - Kurt Amsler
Kurt Amsler was born
in Zurich. At the age of nine he was enthralled by the underwater
world as he leafed through a book by Professor Hans Haas, the famous
underwater pioneer. When just twelve years of age, Kurt Amsler
embarked on what was later to be his profession; he dived in Lake
Zurich taking his first photos with his father's Leica, which he had
waterproofed by wrapping it in the bladder of a football! He has
since become an internationally famous photographer and diver,
having received over 100 awards.
